In the month of March, we salute Family Caregivers. It seems ironic when we are battling an illness currently in our country with Washington State as the epicenter, that we need to acknowledge ALL caregivers — not only those who care for their loved ones, but those on the line who are caring for those in healthcare and long-term care facilities like Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Nursing, hospitals, professional services, and healthcare facilities.

Each and every single day, these individuals put their own health on the line to care for those who are sick, and with a pandemic disease spreading, every single thing they do can expose them to higher risk than the rest of us.

We have a saying: “Have you hugged a caregiver today?” For now, we need to forego the hugs- but maybe a simple and genuine Thank You — will have to do. Maybe it’s a small bouquet from your grocery store to acknowledge them for what they are doing for those who are sick. If you know of a healthcare worker, a simple phone call or email acknowledging them for the sacrifices they are making each day for our loved ones. Whatever it is, they need our support.

We at Answers for Elders hope that you and your families are going whatever it takes to keep you and your loved ones safe. Take an extra moment to check in with the older adults in your world so that if they need groceries or supplies, you can help keep them at home. Above all, have compassion for those who are on the front line caring for those who are sick. The road ahead for those who are caring for others is not an easy one, and now, with COVID-19, it is bound to be a lot more stressful.
