“I’m soooo over it,” was a phrase that a friend of mine expressed to me today, as we have been subjected to one snowstorm after another this month. The other day, as “Snowmageddon” was upon us, I was one of the crazy people at the grocery store to stock up for the days ahead. As I got out of my car, a senior woman was in front of me, and as she stepped out of her car, she slipped slightly and held on to her car to hold herself up from falling. I quickly walked up to her and asked her to take my hand, and I helped her to get into the grocery store and in to an electrical cart to do her shopping. I have to say, even for me it wasn’t easy navigating the icy pavement. I was grateful that I had a good solid snow boot to step on, and also felt like walking like a penguin was my best bet of not slipping and falling!

Yes — This is not only the time for you to be safe, but it has never been more important to make sure that a senior loved one is fairing ok. Given that seniors can be at greater risk for falls or balance, walking on snow and ice, bear in mind that a broken hip can truly create a downward spiral into their quality of life. They however, may think, if they are still living in their home, that they can walk out to the mailbox or to make a quick trip to the grocery store. Make sure that other options are made, such as either meal delivery services, or even bringing your loved one to stay with you through the snow storm.

If your senior loved one lives at home, make sure to be mindful that they have had proper flu vaccines and that their walkways outside are shoveled and cleared of ice. Make sure that their home is free of cold drafts, and that their risk of catching a cold or flu is minimized.

Some additional help to keep a senior healthy in these winter months is to encourage them to take both Vitamin C and Vitamin D. Check in with them every day and keep their spirits up through this difficult time. Let them know that you are available to help and talk about activities you can do together after this snow mess is over. It will help them to pass the time with some positive anticipation and thoughts of good times ahead.

Stay warm and safe! This too shall pass!

Warmest Regards,

Suzanne
