Nesby Glasgow

Attention Greater Seattle/Puget Sound Residents! Who do you know who is that unsung hero? Who puts their life on hold to care for a senior loved one? This year during the last event of 12 Days of Goodness, there will be the first recipient of a brand-new annual award: The Nesby Glasgow Essence Award.

For the 12s, we all knew this Seahawks Legend, as “Nesby” as he played over 14 years in the NFL, but, if you are a Husky fan from the 70’s, no doubt you remember him for big plays, and most specifically helping the Dawgs win the Rose Bowl and National Championship in 1978. You remember that amazing smile, that heart-centered spirit, and that incredible passion and commitment to the world around him no matter what was going on in his life.

Nesby had a tireless commitment to his community and going the extra mile for those he could help or be there for. When we first started 12 Days of Goodness, nine years ago, I had the privilege of getting to know Nesby, as I approached him at one of our events to say “thank you” for the time he invested to be there for our seniors.

His immediate response back to me, was, “No, I should be thanking you! You see, these people are the same ones who cheered for me when I played. I now get to cheer for them and tell them, thanks.” Always deflecting the credit on to others and putting others’ needs before his own, he was a beacon of light in so many ways! When Nesby met those who needed something, without hesitation he always raised his hand to make a difference in their lives.

Not a single year went by in doing the events that Nesby would miss. He usually made several of the 12 Days of Goodness events, and even when he was at the end of his life, he still took it upon himself to be there for our seniors. It’s been over a year since he left us, but I still “hear” that voice of his on the phone in my head, or his gentle essence that told the world that he was here to serve them.

There are individuals in our midst that have given countless sacrifices for the service to someone. That individual truly is the unsung hero that puts the priority of caring for seniors like Nesby did, above their own. Who is someone you know who may not even feel like what they do is worth recognizing? Who do you know all too well, that what they do is above and beyond in service to a senior. Will you help us find them?

Who embodies Nesby’s essence and deserves special recognition as they have continuously, happily, always given daily sacrifices for those they love? Share their story!

It is time to honor them; the person who serves a senior(s) as a caregiver. Have they gone the extra mile day after day, while somehow keeping up with their own lives in the process. Nominate your unsung hero here.

The Nesby Glasgow Essence Award will be given at our Finale Event at the Ballard Northwest Senior Center on Wednesday, December 22nd by Steve Raible. You will be invited to be with them as we share their story with the world, via livestream.

Nesby always said that you could always give “something extra” even when you believed you had given it all you’ve got. He always inspired us that you could never “out-give” to others, and we look forward to meeting those who do the same.
