Culture, Connections, and Celebrations

It’s hard to believe that we are already into the 11th month of the year! No doubt, many of us are planning holidays, holiday shopping and planning we kick into high gear to prepare for family CULTURES, CONNECTIONS, and CELEBRATIONS.
When my mother was alive I knew just how important that the holiday season was for her. I have many, many memories of how hard she worked when I was a child to have the entire family with us at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Because my mother was Swedish, many of our traditions were cultural. As I grew, I let go of some of them, but when I started caring for her I did my best to bring those that I let go, back.  Now that she is gone those traditions for me are more important than ever. They honor the life of my mom, and they provide a cohesiveness to my family heritage.
Yet, as our senior loved ones get older and frailer, holidays likely need to change and a happy balance needs to be achieved.
This month we will explore how to best accommodate seniors and the cultures and traditions that they share. We will give tips and advice on how to make a family celebration most comfortable for seniors and also, tips on traveling and honoring them at this time of year. We also have a culture and tradition of our own as we begin many PSAs to get ready for 12 Days of Goodness with our Seahawks Legends in December!
In closing, November is also the month of Gratitude. I want to personally thank each one of you for listening and being a part of Answers for Elders! We are blessed to be on the air in our third year and look forward to continued success next year as well!  Answers for Elders also would be nothing without the incredible vetted experts who educate families throughout Western Washington on matters that are critical in senior transitions, aging and later life.
Wishing each one of you a Happy Thanksgiving holiday!
