August’s Theme:  What is Adaptive Living?

Happy August to Everyone!

We hope you are enjoying our summer weather as much as we are! I always notice that this time of year, we are busy with summer vacations, and new ways to enhance our lives as we celebrate the last part of summer. This month, Answers for Elders is all about enhancing ones’ life by helping to provide resources to improve mobility and to allow your lifestyle to be supported, as we embrace the theme, “Adaptive Living.”

Perhaps this summer you are visiting a senior loved one. When you walk into the bathroom, do they have grab bars installed? (They should have them even before they need them.)

Are they walking easily throughout their home without assistance or do they brace themselves on furniture, or have a difficult time navigating stairs?

If you are a senior, do you find yourself not able to navigate your living space as easily as you used to? Do you pay attention to how you rise from bed in the morning? Are you less mobile earlier in the day or in the middle of the night? Perhaps you are looking to the future and wondering how to maintain your home and stay independent. Experts say that our homes should support us for years to come, and with proper adaptations, in many cases, your home can support you over the long term. That means having a living space, that is accessible and functional to keep ourselves independent as long as possible. The good news is that there are a multitude of resources available to us!

Whether you are a senior who lives alone in your home, a baby boomer who may start to feel the aches and pains of aging or an adult child who may feel a bit of concern for a loved one, we hope that the content that you find here can help you uncover resources that you may not have thought of to make life a lot easier!

Adaptive Living may mean finding not only the right grab bars for the bathroom, but it also means installing them correctly in the right place.

It may mean using aids to assist you with mobility when you walk, proper home modifications or transportation resources. It also might mean some help in keeping you safe through home technology, like smart panels or motion sensor lighting. It might mean finding new resources for transportation or to provide assistance at home.

We hope you enjoy this month’s articles, podcasts and weekend programs and look forward to sharing with you some incredible experts the rest of this month to make getting around a lot easier!

Warmest Regards,
